MacIntyre has his eyes on a rare Scottish double in golf

  • By DOUG FERGUSON - AP Golf Writer

Robert MacIntyre is giving Scotland hope that one of its own can win a British Open on Scottish soil. He won the Scottish Open on Sunday and celebrated into the night. MacIntyre was later than usual getting to Royal Troon. He plans to take the same approach that has carried him to a breakthrough year with two wins. It's not about trying to win a golf tournament. It's about battling on every shot to play his best golf and see where it leads. Only two players from Scotland in the last 100 years have own a British Open in Scotland.

The club says, “We cannot yet evaluate or comment on these reports due to a lack of information.” Mainz signed the 23-year-old Sano, a defensive midfielder, from Kashima Antlers on July 3. He signed a four-year deal and is the club’s third Japanese signing after Shinji Okazaki and Yoshinori Muto. Sano was to join his new teammates in Mainz for pre-season training on Sunday. New South Wales beats Queensland 14-4 to win the State of Origin Australian rugby league series

  • AP

Center Bradman Best fended off two players to score the go-ahead try in the 65th minute and help give New South Wales a 14-4 win over Queensland in the third and deciding match in the annual State of Origin Australian rugby league series. Mitchell Moses scored a second try four minutes later to clinch the match for the Blues, who had not won a deciding match in Brisbane since 2005 and only achieved it once before that — in 1994. Valentine Holmes kicked a pair of penalty goals to account for all of the Queensland scoring.

Hikers and cyclists can now cross Vermont on New England's longest rail trail, a year after floods

  • By WILSON RING - Associated Press

The longest rail trail in New England is open this summer for bike riders, hikers, horseback riders and others. The 93-mile Lamoille Valley Rail Trail was finished in the late spring of 2023. But last July, days before it was set to be formally inaugurated, summer floods closed the trail. The trail was damaged by flooding again this year, but more than 81 miles of it is open. Users can travel the four-season trail between Swanton, in northwestern Vermont, and St. Johnsbury, not far from the Connecticut River border with New Hampshire. Repairs to the flood damage from 2023 and this year are ongoing. The trail goes through 18 communities and includes the Fisher Covered Bridge, one of the last covered railroad bridges in the country.

Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray could be bidding adieu to tennis at the Paris Olympics

  • By HOWARD FENDRICH - AP Tennis Writer

The tennis competition at the Paris Olympics could be where past gold medalists Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray bid adieu to the sport. Both have been dealing with injuries for a while. It would be appropriate for Nadal to finish his career at the Summer Games because the tennis will be held at Roland Garros. That is the same site that hosts the French Open every year, and Nadal has won a record 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles there. Murray recently withdrew from singles at Wimbledon after having a cyst removed from his spine. He is the only tennis player to win a pair of Olympic golds.

Chelsea begins disciplinary action after Fernandez's involvement in Argentina player chants

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

Chelsea has begun disciplinary action after midfielder Enzo Fernandez was involved in a video where members of Argentina’s Copa America-winning squad appeared to sing about French players with African heritage. FIFA also said it was also looking into the incident after the French soccer federation pledged to file a complaint with the sport’s world governing body over “racist and discriminatory remarks.” Fernandez said he was “truly sorry” and Chelsea said discriminatory behaviour was “completely unacceptable.” Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 on Sunday at Miami Gardens, Florida. Afterwards a video posted on Fernandez’s Instagram account appeared to show Argentina players chanting about France’s team as they celebrated.

A house with best views of British Open is up for sale. It's in the middle of the Royal Troon course

  • By KEN MAGUIRE - AP Sports Writer

Royal Troon has some unique aspects but maybe most curious is the private house that sits in the middle of the championship course and has views of five holes for the British Open starting Thursday. It's known as “Blackrock House” and is located between the greens of holes No. 2 and No. 16. It's also close to the tees of No. 18 and two others. Originally built as one house, it was converted in the early 1970s into two dwellings. The Kelly family has owned the north side of the house since 1990 and has has now put it up for sale. The asking price has not been announced yet.
